STANFORD, Calif. – Leah Freeman and Croix Soto anchored an impressive defensive effort as Oregon and Stanford played to a 0-0 tie in overtime in a nonconference match Sunday at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
It is the first time in program history that the Ducks (5-3-3) have gone undefeated on the Bay Area trip. It was also the first time that Oregon held the Cardinal scoreless on their home field.
"The mentality we were able to show this weekend was incredible," said head coach Graeme Abel. "We knew the quality of Stanford from our game earlier this year."
How it Happened: Freeman made a career-high nine saves, while Soto and the Oregon back line kept Stanford (5-3-1) from building a sustained attack in front of Oregon's goal.
Zoe Hasenauer had a good look at the net early in the match for the Ducks, curling an 18-yard shot just outside the far post in the 10th minute.
Oregon pushed the action in the later stages of the first half. Four of the Ducks' six shots in the period came in the last 11 minutes of the frame.
Oregon's best chance to score in the first half came off a corner kick in the 38th minute. The ball deflected out to Mia Palmer whose shot hit the crossbar and on the rebound, Chardonnay Curran sent another shot on net that had to be cleared off the line by a Cardinal defender. Freeman made four saves in the first half.
The teams exchanged salvos throughout the second half and overtime.
In the 58th minute, Stanford's Maya Doms ripped a screaming left-footer toward the far side of the net that Freeman turned away with a diving save.
Oregon's closest chance for a goal came in the 60th minute. Jordan Wormdahl centered a ball to Ally Cook in the Cardinal's box. Cook then one-timed the ball toward the right side of the Stanford goal, but Katie Meyer made a sprawling save for the Cardinal.
Wormdahl had a look in the 94th minute of overtime. Freshman Megan Rucker sent a pass over the Cardinal defense that Wormdahl was able to run down on the right side, but her shot from a tight angle sailed wide.
Freeman had three saves in the second half and two more in overtime to keep Stanford off the board.
Who Stood Out: Virtually the entire team joined back line starters Soto, Curran, Palmer and Chai Cortez, and Rucker who came on in the 71st minute, by contributing to one of the Ducks' best defensive efforts of the season.
What It Means: Oregon's defense has not allowed a goal in four straight matches, one shy of the program record of five set in 2011. It has been 396:28 since the Ducks last allowed a goal (Arizona State, March 12).
Notable: The Ducks are unbeaten in their last five matches. Oregon is the first team to go unbeaten in two matches against Stanford in the same season since UCLA defeated the Cardinal twice in 2013. Freeman's five shutouts are tied for sixth on the UO single-season list and are also sixth on the UO career list. Sophomore midfielder Maya Hahn got her first start of the season and the second of her career.
