Adbert Alzolay Makes Team, Will Start Fifth Game as Eventual Role Still TBD - Cubs Insider

Even with an extra option at their disposal, the Cubs have chosen to keep Adbert Alzolay with the team as part of the Opening Day roster. David Ross made that announcement Saturday afternoon as he discussed some of the team’s other decisions with Shelby Miller and Nico Hoerner in particular. Miller has looked good all spring and is still expected to help the team at some point, but he’s been assigned to minor league camp for the time being.

Though it’s not necessarily as simple as opting for either Alzolay or Miller, both are righties who figure to be used in flex roles. Ross named Alzolay his starter for the Cubs’ fifth game with Trevor Williams going fourth, but the manager and pitching coach Tommy Hottovy have said several times that Alzolay will work as both a starter and reliever. However, that option may yet come into play for those situations in which the team needs to add a fresh pitcher.

That could wind up working out very well for both Alzolay and the Cubs, as his innings can be controlled while also maintaining a good deal of roster flexibility. For those keeping track at home, this makes Alec Mills the primary swingman to start the season.
