Baseball Earns Split On Strength Of Marsee's Slam, Brown's Complete Game - Central Michigan University Chippewas

ATHENS, Ohio – Cameron Brown threw a complete game and freshman Jakob Marsee hit a grand slam as the Central Michigan baseball team topped Ohio, 12-2, on Saturday to earn a split of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at the Bobcats' Bob Wren Stadium.

Ohio won the opener, 4-3. The Chippewas are 9-8, 1-2 MAC; Ohio is 10-8, 3-4. The teams are scheduled to conclude their four-game series on Sunday (1 p.m.).

Both of Saturday's game went seven innings.

Game 2
Marsee's grand slam highlighted a six-run sixth inning as the Chippewas broke a 2-2 tie. They added four runs in the seventh.

It was Marsee's first homer of the season and the second of his career. His first, also a grand slam, came on March 7, 2020 at North Florida. His round-tripper came on an 0-2 pitch and was a no-doubter to right field.

"Obviously a two-run inning turning into a six-run inning is big with the big swing there," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "Jakob's an awfully good hitter. It's funny with these COVID freshmen, because they're like freshmen-and-a-half. They are in their second year and they understand what you're trying to do, but they still don't have that much experience. Hitting in those spots is not always the easiest thing and he's struggled a little bit, so it was great to see him just trust himself and put a good swing on the ball."

It was CMU's second home run of the season, making the Chippewas an aberration since they lead the MAC in runs. They loaded the bases, however, for Marsee's big blow in a very Chippewa way with three walks, a sacrifice bunt, a safety squeeze, and a hit batsman.

"We did a really good job of executing our style of baseball leading up to the grand slam," Bischel said. "We did a lot of little things that set the table, which was great to see."

Brown (3-0) was again solid, allowing five hits and walking two while striking out seven in going the distance. The senior right-hander went 10-1 with a 3.20 earned run average in 2019; in the abbreviated 2020 season, he was 1-3 with a 10.47 ERA.

"Cam was really outstanding," Bischel said. "He's been really good for us this year after a tough (2020). He's really righted the ship and given us good outings."

Marsee and Mario Camilletti had two hits apiece to lead the Chippewas at the plate. Camilletti drove in two runs.

Game 1
CMU's Andrew Taylor (3-2) went the distance (six innings) and allowed just two hits – one a three-run homer in the third inning – while striking out 11 and walking two.

The Chippewas took a 2-0 lead on a second-inning two-run single by Colton Coca. Ohio went ahead, 3-2, on a three-run homer by Isaiah Peterson. The Chippewas tied it in the fourth when Mario Camilletti drew a two-out bases-loaded walk.

The Bobcats scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth when Trevor Hafner walked, took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.

Zach Heeke had two hits to lead CMU's five-hit attack.

"We had two well-pitched games today," Bischel said. "(Taylor) gave up the three-run homer and we made an error that inning. Sometimes you do have to tip the cap; they put one good swing on the ball and turned it into three runs."

Looking Ahead
The win in the nightcap was big, not only because it gives them a chance to split the series with a win on Sunday, but also because of the method in which they did it.

"The six-run inning was big in a couple of ways," Bischel said. "We got into the later innings in a tie game and when you're not off to a great start to the weekend you obviously feel a little pressure there.

"We just haven't been a real consistent team so far, and not just in terms of wins and losses, but even in how we swing the bats. We'll come out and bang around a bunch of base hits and take a bunch of on-time swings and then another day we'll just have too tentative of a mentality. Hopefully it's a step forward in figuring out what we need to do to be a little more consistent."
