MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota rowing team opened its 2022-23 season Saturday morning taking to the water for the Head of the Mississippi Regatta and tallied wins in three of the four races it competed on the day.
Racing on campus along the Mississippi River for the only time this year, it was the 42nd year the event was hosted by the Minneapolis Rowing Club and gave Minnesota a chance to set the tone for the season.
The Golden Gophers got the day started turning in the top three finishes during the Women's Collegiate 4+ race. The boat of Lindsay Kalish, Bethany Zmak, Kat Johanns, Nuala Macfarlane and coxswain Misha Shah led the way with a winning time of 18:16.035. A second-place result was turned in by Eleni Charalampidou-Layton, Anna Stephenson, Annie Moen, Kimball Utsey and coxswain Courtney Rei Cochico in 18:23.487. The Maroon and Gold also had the next boat come through in a time of 18:28.336 with Meri Bosnic, Mia Forouhari, Cady Isom, Grace Loescher and coxswain Sophie Banik competing.
In the Women's Collegiate Freshman 8+, Minnesota placed second and third overall led by the boat of Josephine Wise, Chloe Kremnitzer, Carly Gladieux, Kendall Karrmann, Manon Field, Peyton Miller, Natalia Walkowski, Sarah Anderson and cox Tammy Nguyen. Their time of 20:13.740 finished behind only Creighton, while the Gophers' group of Madeline Behfar, Grace Raab, Anna Perron, Anna Farley, Eleanor Kayser, Katherine Strowig, Kennedy Cardwell, Abigail Bergstrom and cox Olivia Tjernlund placed third in 22:45.026.
The top four boats in the Women's Open 2- were all Minnesota getting a first-place finish from the duo of Erin Sullivan and Cecilie Christensen in 19:22.100. The top pair edged teammates Harriet Haege and Ella Saunders as they raced to second (19:24.976) before Kiralli Schoefeld and Mallory Garfield were third (20:22.847). The boat featuring Tallulah Sweet and Nena Papaterpou ended up fourth in the race with a time of 20:31.963.
It was the Gophers setting the pace in the Women's Collegiate 8+ as the boat of Cecilie Christensen, Erin Sullivan, Ella Saunders, Harriet Haege, Tallulah Sweet, Nena Papaterpou, Kiralli Schoefeld, Mallory Garfield and cox Isabella Bejaran tallied a winning time of 15:38.595. Right behind them in 16:07.959 was another Minnesota crew as Anna Stephenson, Annie Moen, Brooke Bierbaum, Eleni Charalampidou-Layton, Cady Isom, Mia Forouhari, Kimball Utsey, Grace Loescher and cox Wren Wodek. The Maroon and Gold added a fourth-place result in the race with Lindsay Kalish, Meri Bosnic, Kat Johanns, Bethany Zmak, Madeline Lange, Nuala Macfarlane, Haley Campain, Sydney Hicks and cox Miranda Cyr posting a time of 16:55.317.
Coach Strodel's Comments
"I'm pleased with our efforts today! It was good for our athletes to race twice and show improvement from the morning to afternoon races," Minnesota head coach Alicea Strodel said. "We have a lot of work to do, as expected this time of year, but definitely a great launching point."
