Hempstead, NY - The dream start to the Colonial Athletic Association schedule continued for the Hofstra volleyball team as the Pride cruised to a four-set win over Charleston on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center. Set scores were 25-19, 25-19, 15-25, and 25-15.
The win was Hofstra's eighth consecutive victory and moves the Pride to 8-0 in conference play. The win streak is the longest since a nine-match win streak in 2018 and the 8-0 CAA start is the second best in the program's CAA-era and only bested by the 13-0 CAA start to the 2006 conference slate.
Senior Zyare Abdul-Rahim led Hofstra with 11 kills, while freshman Emilly Nunes tallied a season-best 10 and junior Yagmur Cinel also chipped in with 10.
Hofstra is now 11-8 overall in addition to its unblemished conference mark. Charleston is now 7-12 and 2-4 in the league.
The Pride jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match with identical scores in the first two sets. They did it both on offense and defense early on as Hofstra hit at a .412 clip in the opening stanza before holding Charleston to a .073 attack percentage in the second set to take the commanding lead. The Cougars took the third set as the Pride couldn't get on track on offense, but the fourth and final set left no doubt as Hofstra pulled away for a convincing win in the set and a dominating weekend with two victories.
It was another outstanding effort from sophomores Beatriz Alves and Chiara Cucco as Alves had 42 assists, seven digs, five kills, and two blocks, while Cucco had 20 digs, three assists, and two service aces. Senior Sarah Pierre notched a match-high seven blocks and added five kills in the contest.
Gabi Bailey led Charleston with 11 kills and 10 digs, while Emma Appleman had 19 assists and seven digs and Jasmin Goei added 19 assists and six digs.
Hofstra is back in action next Saturday when it travels to North Carolina for a pair of matches against UNCW. The Pride will face the Seahawks on Saturday at 4 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will air on FloVolleyball.
