Roadrunners complete sweep in Hattiesburg - UTSA Athletics

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For the first time in program history, the UTSA softball team swept Southern Miss over the weekend.
 
Game one
UTSA clinched the series with a 3-0 victory in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
 
The Roadrunners took an early lead in the second. Taylor Medina reached first on a wild pitch and Hannah Boring followed reaching on a fielder's choice as Medina was tagged out at second. Kat Ibarra reach on an error and Celeste Loughman singled to left as runners advanced. Madison Washington singled to right field as Ibarra and Boring scored to take a 2-0 lead.
 
In the seventh, Riley Grunberg doubled to left field to open the inning. She then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Washington earned a walk and while Kindell Brooks was up to bat, Grunberg reached home on a wild pitch as UTSA led 3-0. Brooks also earned a walk, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the frame. A 1-2-3 inning closed the game.
 
Freshman Alexa Williams pitched all seven innings with three strikeouts and allowed just two hits. She also retired 12 consecutive batters.
 
The Roadrunners recorded six hits on the day with Marena Estell leading the team with two.
 
Game two
UTSA scored five runs in the sixth to defeat Southern Miss 7-2 in game four of the series.
 
In the third, Hannah Boring and Kat Ibarra opened with back-to-back walks. Celeste Loughman reached first on a fielder's choice as Boring was tagged out at third. Ibarra advanced to third on a wild pitch and Loughman stole second to put runners in scoring position. Riley Grunberg and Madison Washington had back-to-back singles to right field as Ibarra and Loughman scored, respectively, to lead 2-0.
 
UTSA was on fire in the sixth. Erykah Guerrero opened with a double to right field. Taylor Medina followed with a single as Guerrero advanced to third. Boring stepped up and lifted the ball to left field as Guerrero scored (3-0). Ibarra reached first on an error to load the bases. Loughman reached on a fielder's choice as Ibarra was tagged out and Medina scored (4-0). With one out and runners on first and third, Grunberg smacked the ball out of the park for a three-run homer to extend the lead to seven. Washington followed with a single, but a flyout and a strikeout ended the top of the frame. The Golden Eagles scored two runs from a homer to close the gap to five (7-2), but three ground outs ended the inning.
 
Jamie Gilbert earned the start, pitching four innings with three strikeouts and had just one hit. Tatum Seith came in for one inning and had two strikeouts before being relieved by Clarissa Hernandez who pitched the final two innings.
 
The Roadrunners return to the field April 21 when they host McNeese State at 6 p.m.
