Mets' Bullpen Still a Cause for Concern

The New York Mets bullpen had several question marks heading into the regular season — especially after losing Seth Lugo to elbow surgery.

However, their performance has been uglier than expected in the Amazins’ first two games, as their relievers have allowed a total of 11 hits and four earned runs in five innings of work thus far.

What’s even more concerning is, the pitchers they are relying on to get big outs this season are the ones who have had shaky outings in Trevor May, Aaron Loup and Miguel Castro.

Pitching for the second-straight night, Castro got two quick outs, but gave up three hits and a run in a 27-pitch seventh. After a rough debut on Monday night, May was also sent back out there in the eighth — and while he once again struggled to locate his pitches, the right-hander was able to get out of a second-and-third jam to escape without surrendering a run.

According to manager Luis Rojas, the plan was to get May in the game despite holding onto a comfortable four-run lead.

“We had a talk last night and he said he was ready to go back in there tomorrow. The more guys we can get in there, the better. We were looking for a situation to bring him in. We trust May. He’s going to help us win a lot of games in big spots,” said Rojas

Jeurys Familia handled mop up duties with his team ahead by six runs in the ninth. While Familia allowed two runs, there was a throwing error behind him that led to an unearned run. He also gave up two hits on soft contact that landed in the right spot for the Phillies.

Regardless, an 8-4 game should not feel as close as it did on Tuesday night and it is a cause for concern moving forward.

Rojas on the other hand, is happy with how his relievers bounced back and expressed his confidence in this unit moving forward.

“We have a really good and deep bullpen,” said Rojas.

Rojas is hoping his relievers can shake some of the rust off and perform up to standard. Otherwise, the Mets are in for a long season if their bullpen can’t find a way to figure it out.
