FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - It’s the first weekend since the mask mandate was lifted across the state leaving bar and restaurant owners to make their own decision if they should require masks.
John Ryan Oleary regularly visits O’Sullivan's Italian Pub. He says he’s always felt safe going to the bar through the pandemic as they’ve been strict with wearing masks and other safety measures but this is his first time back since the mask mandate was lifted.
"O’s, they’re pretty serious about it, if you're standing up without a mask on, they’ll make you sit down or leave,” Oleary said. "I haven’t been vaccinated yet so I’ll still be wearing one most of the time just to be safe.”
Part owner of O’Sullivan's Frank Casagrande says they decided not to require people to wear masks inside anymore, it’s now only a requirement for his employees.
"I was very happy to see people mingling and all that,” he said. “A lot of people still have their masks on and we encourage it.”
He says he feels safe knowing more people are getting vaccinated and they are still encouraging mask wearing.
"If Dr. Sutter comes out and says hey, we’re going into a stage where we need to put them back on, we will be right back where we were a week ago.”
He says he will stay updated with the recommendations from the local health department. He says if cases rise, and masks are mandated again, they won’t hesitate to follow those guidelines.
