Filed your taxes, still no refund? You're not alone - Fort Wayne's NBC

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -- If you filed your tax return a while ago, you may be wondering where your refund is.

You are not alone -- millions of Americans are still waiting to get their checks from the IRS.

"Here it's April 9 and I still do not have my taxes," Monica Florence said.

"If I owed them money, they wouldn't want to wait that long," Toni Mast told us.

"The backlog is incredible," said Liberty Tax Service's Dori Miller.

She says the IRS is struggling.

She says it shut down just like the rest of the country for the coronavirus, and still may not be back at full strength.

Plus, she says Congress changed tax laws after the tax season had already begun.

Millions of Americans have no information about when their federal tax refunds could arrive.

"There are a lot of factors that are slowing a lot of tax returns down. Some early filers hadn't received their second stimulus, but after they filed, shortly after they filed, they did receive it, and now the IRS has to adjust that refund. Same thing for unemployment," Miller said.

Mast says she filed a simple return March 3, and finally got through to the IRS after waiting hours on hold.

"My return had been transferred to somewhere in Arizona for 'quality control,' so here I am. He said that can take up to 10 weeks," she said.

She says she doesn't need her refund right away, but understands many people do.

"I know there's families that really depend and need that money and I feel really bad for them," Mast said.

Florence says she filed her return February 11.

"It's been a struggle because I am actually doing dental assisting school and I was going to use that money to pay for my school. So now I am borrowing the money until I get my taxes, if I ever get my taxes," she said.

Miller says that's why you can never count your chickens before they hatch, even if you're expecting a golden egg from the government.

"You cannot go buy plane tickets or pay your credit card and assume that money is going to be in your account even if the status bar says your refund will be released on X date," Miller said.

She says don't call the IRS unless you filed your return more than 45 days ago, and don't check its website more than once a day because it's only updated early in the morning.

"I just want my money. I don't understand this. I've never had an issue," Florence said.

Millions of Americans are in the same situation with no information about when their refunds could arrive.

To check the status of your tax return, you can go to the IRS website here.

You will need your Social Security Number, the date you filed your taxes, and the dollar amount you are supposed to receive.
