Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina rallied in both ends of Sunday's doubleheader to complete the three-game Southern Conference series sweep of VMI at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium.
The Catamounts trailed 7-1 through four innings in game one of the twinbill before scoring eight of the game's final nine runs to edge the Keydets, 9-8, to win the series. Then, in the nightcap, WCU rallied from deficits of 7-0 and 12-10, capping the series with a six-run eighth inning to power past VMI 16-12 in the finale.
The Catamounts won a 3-0, weather-shortened opener on Saturday night as heavy fog ended the game after five innings in the series opener.
Junior Daniel Walsh doubled twice in a 6-for-8 performance with two walks in Sunday's doubleheader, plating a pair of runs. Freshman Pascanel Ferreras went 5-for-9 with a double, three walks, and a couple of RBI, while classmate Zach Ketterman was 4-for-9 with a double and two RBI. Junior OF Seth Graves doubled twice among his three hits in the two-game set with a pair of walks and four runs driven in, while Luke Robinson collected a team-best six RBI in the two games with five hits, including WCU's only homer of the day.
Game One Recap – WCU 9, VMI 8
Luke Robinson belted a game-tying two-run home run as a part of a three-run seventh inning before capping the eighth with a run-scoring single as the Catamounts rallied for a 9-8 victory in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
Robinson pulled WCU back to within two, 7-5, in the fifth inning with a two-out single to score Pascanel Ferreras and Seth Graves. Two innings later, the McLeansville, N.C., native belted his team-leading eighth home run to tie the game at seven before Daniel Walsh singled through the left side to score Justice Bigbie to push the Catamounts ahead, 8-7.
VMI rallied back with a sacrifice fly by Cole Garrett in the top of the eighth inning to knot the game at eight apiece. In the bottom of the inning, though, Robinson delivered a run-scoring single to right-center to push the Catamounts ahead for good in the 9-8 victory.
WCU starter Ryan Mitschele struck out seven among the 10 outs he recorded in a 3.1 effort, working around three walks while surrendering six runs on seven hits. Jacob Corn struck out one in two innings of relief with Zach Franklin (3-2) securing the victory out of the bullpen, pitching the final two frames with one run on one hit allowed with a walk and a strikeout.
Jacob Menders struck out three against five walks in 4.2 innings in the start for the Keydets, with reliever Seth Ewald (0-1) suffering the defeat in allowing the game-winning run on three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Justin Starke led four Keydets with multi-hit games with a 3-for-5 performance, while Cole Garrett homered in a 2-for-3, three RBI outing.
Game Two Recap – WCU 16, VMI 12
Western Carolina used a six-run eighth inning to cap a wild doubleheader nightcap in completing the three-game series sweep. Trailing 12-10 entering the eighth, Daylan Nanny singled up the middle before Will Prater dropped a two-run single down the left-field line to push the Catamounts ahead for good. Zach Ketterman delivered an RBI single and Seth Graves a run-scoring walk before the final run scored on a passed ball to cap the scoring in the 16-12 win.
Ketterman drove in two in a 3-for-4 performance while Daniel Walsh was 3-for-5 as five Catamounts had multi-hit games. Graves had two hits and a team-best four RBI, while Prater was 2-for-5 with three runs driven in.
Zach Franklin (4-2) earned his second victory of the day, tossing the final two innings out of the bullpen as the ninth Catamount pitcher to toe the rubber. The Marion, N.C., native struck out five with one unearned run allowed on two hits with a walk. Tristen Campbell, the fourth arm used by WCU on the day, struck out four over three solid relief innings, scattering three hits in scoreless relief.
VMI reliever Adam Jewell (1-4) was the tough-luck loser, scattering seven hits over three innings while surrendering six runs – five earned – with a pair of walks and two strikeouts.
Justin Starke finished 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and a home run, plating five runs to lead the Keydets offensively.
Western Carolina (18-7, 6-2 SoCon) continues its current eight-game homestand on Tuesday evening, welcoming nationally-ranked Tennessee (27-6) to Childress Field / Hennon Stadium for a nonconference meeting with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday's game is slated to be broadcast on ESPN+ (paid subscription required). The Vols upended the Catamounts 9-2 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville back on March 30.
