Mother Nature is still in charge
The chairman of the American Soybean Association is calling for an early planting season in his region.
Bill Gordon, who farms in southwest Minnesota, tells Brownfield the weather has been ideal the last couple of weeks, even hitting 70 degrees for a day, but the field conditions aren’t there yet.
“You saw people pulling their planters out and getting excited and then Mother Nature had to remind us that it’s still March and we just had four to five inches of snow and ice,” he shares.
But he says the moisture was welcomed.
“We were pretty dry, we got some rain lately and we need it to keep building that soil moisture profile,” he says.
Gordon still remains optimistic planting can kick off in the middle of April after the greatest danger of frost and freeze events.
