Lancaster County officials are still looking for answers from the U.S. Postal Service about 100 or more mail-in ballots that failed to arrive at the elections office before the Nov. 7 election night deadline, despite being mailed two weeks prior.

At a Wednesday board of elections meeting, Lancaster County elections director Christa Miller said her office, lawmakers representing the county in the Legislature and officials from the Pennsylvania Department of State are still pressing Postal Service officials about what caused the delay.

“Everyone’s involved in trying to figure out what happened,” Miller said.

Postal Service officials have told the county they are looking into the issue, Miller said, but so far she has received no information on what caused the delay.

LNP | LancasterOnline confirmed last week that approximately 100 to 150 mail-in ballots, all postmarked Oct. 30 in Harrisburg, did not reach the county elections office until Nov. 13, six days after the Election Day deadline. They were rejected because of their late arrival.

It is unclear how many county residents had their votes disqualified for the 2023 municipal election as a result of the mail delay. A couple voters told LNP | LancasterOnline they had successfully voted by provisional ballot when they realized they had not received a notification from the Department of State that their mail-in ballot had been received.

Miller did not say Wednesday whether Postal Service officials indicated when they might release more information about the ballots.

“We have reviewed the processes involved and reached out to work with the board of elections,” said Mark Lawrence, a regional spokesman for USPS, in an email. “We have nothing further to offer.”
