The World Athlete of the Year award will be handed out at the World Athletics Gala 2023 in Monte Carlo on Monday (11 December).
The award was inaugurated in 1988 and goes to the best male and female track and field athletes of that calendar year.
The winners will join an elite list of names with the World Athlete of the Year award inaugurated in 1988.
Usain Bolt has collected the prize a record six times with Hicham El Guerrouj and Yelena Isinbaeva next on three apiece.
Two-time winners include Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Sanya Richards, Kenenisa Bekele, Eliud Kipchoge and Mondo Duplantis who is on the shortlist for this year's gong.
In 2005, World Athletics introduced the Rising Star of the Year award for the best under-20 athlete. Nafissatou Thiam took the prize before being named World Athlete of the Year 12 months later.
Erriyon Knighton is the only athlete to win two Rising Star awards.
