Tom Lockyer remained in hospital undergoing tests and scans on Sunday following the Luton Town captain’s on-field collapse during Saturday’s Premier League match with Bournemouth.
Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch in the 59th minute of Saturday’s game and was treated by medical staff on the ground at the Vitality Stadium before being taken to hospital. The game, which was 1-1 at the time, was suspended and later abandoned with the clock paused on 65 minutes.
Luton issued a statement on Sunday to say Lockyer, 29, was now in a stable condition, after being described as “alert and responsive”. They also asked for patience and understanding from fans and media outlets.
The statement said: “While our captain Tom Lockyer remains in hospital following the cardiac arrest he suffered on the pitch at Bournemouth yesterday, we understand that supporters are concerned for him and that there is widespread media interest in his condition.
“Tom is still undergoing tests and scans, and is awaiting the results before the next steps for his recovery are determined. We are unable to provide a running commentary on his situation, and request that all media please wait for any updates to be released via the club’s official channels when the time is right.
“We all want the very best for Tom, his partner Taylor and the whole Lockyer family, and politely ask that his and their privacy is respected at this difficult time.”
The Guardian has been told the decision to abandon the game at Bournemouth was undertaken by the match officials, led by referee Simon Hooper, in conjunction with the players and the two managers, Andoni Iraola and Rob Edwards.
It is expected the game will be rearranged and replayed in full, as per Premier League rules, with the league’s board currently considering that decision and an announcement to be made in due course.
