Canisius, Duquesne and Robert Morris
May 8th, 2022, Portersville, Pa.
Moraine State Park - Lake Arthur
PORTERSVILLE, PA - This past Sunday, the Duquesne Dukes rolled into Moraine State Park for a Mother's Day race against Robert Morris and Canisius. Originally scheduled for the Ohio River, the teams had to move to Lake Arthur because heavy rains the second half of the week rendered both the Ohio and Allegheny rivers unrowable. Though the grass was a bit squishy on land, the water on Lake Arthur could not have been better. With a slight tailwind and abundant sunshine, temps in the mid-60s, it was a perfect set up for some quick times, and the crews launched out onto the lake for some racing.
The first race of the day was the Varsity 4+, featuring a showdown between Duquesne's first and second 4+, as well as the first 4+ each from Canisius and Robert Morris. With the boats aligned and the start command given, the Duquesne boats took a quick advantage over the Griffins and the Colonials. As the Duquesne boats built a lead on their competitors, neither one could fully break free of the other; the 1V4+ held an advantage, but the 2V4+ would not relent. At the final sprint to the finish line, the 1V4+ managed to increase the distance on the 2V4+, earning a 6 second victory over the 2V4+, who finished 29 seconds ahead of Canisius. Both boats came off the water happy with their rows, and happy their teammates pushed hard the whole length of the course.
As the 4+s raced down the course, the Second Varsity 8+s lined up on the start line. As with the fours race, the 2V8+ race featured Duquesne's 2V8+ and 3V8+, as well as the 2V8+ from both Canisius and Robert Morris. With the starting command, the Duquesne 2V8 jumped out to a quick lead, and continued to build on it the entire length of the course. Meanwhile, the Duquesne 3V8 embroiled themselves in a closer battle with the Griffins, the Dukes held an edge but Canisius hung tough. Call after call, the two coxswains fought it out with their crews, and at the finish line, it was Duquesne's 3V8 that got the better of the contest, finishing 6 seconds ahead of Canisius, while the Duquesne 2V8+ finished 27 seconds ahead of the Duquesne 3V8+.
The next race was a race between one first Varsity 8+ apiece from Duquesne, Robert Morris, and Canisius. As with the previous races, off the start the Dukes jumped out to a solid lead that they maintained, wire-to-wire. With a new lineup in the boat, the race was a good chance for the crew to find a good rhythm and the coxswain to try out some new calls in a competitive environment. The Dukes responded well, found some good flow in their boat, and earned a 13 second victory over Canisius, who was closely followed by Robert Morris, one second behind.
The final race of the day was a matchup against the Duquesne 3V4+ and the Robert Morris 2V4+. Off the line, the Duquesne boat grabbed an advantage, and settled into their race. Their coxswain found a good line and made some new and improved calls, which her crew responded well to, and they had a fantastic row, coming off the water with smiles on their faces from a piece well rowed. The Dukes defeated the Colonials by one minute, 57 seconds.
Once back on land, after loading their trailer, the team celebrated the seven seniors present at the regatta: Eliza Mance, Celia Gambacorta, Isabella Trovato, Kayla Eads, Bridget Hennessy, Julia Stoll, and Brianna McDonagh.
"I'm really glad we were able to make this race happen, and a lot of the thanks goes to the Robert Morris head coach, Carol" said interim head coach Stephen Eckstein. "Carol really hustled to make this race happen, and I'm glad we were able to make the last minute adaptations to get all of our boats out on the course on such a beautiful day. I'm grateful to Robert Morris and Canisius for coming out and racing with us! It was a great day for our last regular season competition, a great way to send off our Seniors, and we look forward to putting the finishing touches on our boats that will race at the Atlantic 10 Championship next week."
The Dukes return to action on Saturday with a post-season contest at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship in Camden, NJ.
