MassDOT said Tuesday that it’s completed the yearlong, $2.8 million task of renumbering highway exits across the Commonwealth so they comply with federal regulations reflecting milepost, not sequential, numbering.
MassDOT said it began this project Oct. 18, 2020, on Route 140 between Taunton and Freetown. MassDOT finished the Statewide Exit Renumbering Project on August 19, 2021 by completing the final corridor on I-395 between Auburn and Webster. Crews renumbered the MassPike in December of 2020.
Massachusetts now complies with federal regulations meant to make it easier for emergency responders to find those in need and to ease navigation for motorists.
The cost is covered by Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funds with a 90/10 split. Ninety percent of the project will be funded through federal funds and the remaining 10% will be funded through state highway funds.
“I would like to thank the traveling public for their patience and understanding during this project,” Jonathan Gulliver, MassDOT Highway Administrator, said. “The completion of the conversion to mile-based exit numbers brings us into federal compliance and provides important information, like precise locations and an easily understandable calculation of driving distances, to First Responders and all other users of the roadway.”
So instead of being numbered sequentially, the exits are now numbered to match mile markers, like the number system in place in the rest of the country. For example, old Exit 3 on the MassPike in Westfield is now Exit 41. On Interstate 91 in Longmeadow and Springfield, Exits 1,2 3 and southbound Exit 4 didn’t change because they are so close together the sequence matches the mile markers.
MassDOt has installed “old exit” signs at the interchanges temporarily to help drivers with the transition.

- Interstate 190
- Interstate 195
- Interstate 290
- Interstate 295
- Interstate 395
- Interstate 495
- Route 2
- Route 3
- Route 6
- Route 24
- Route 25
- Route 128
- Route 140
- Route 146
- US Route 3
