Bayonne is assessing the damage after being hit by the remnants of Hurricane Ida, according to Mayor James Davis.
The storm dropped over nine inches of rain on the city, flooding various low-lying areas, stranding cars and submerging basements. Luckily, Bayonne fared better than some of its neighbors against arguably one of the worst storms since Super Storm Sandy.
The city dealt with the damage by providing dumpsters at various locations in the city to dispose of storm-damaged property. Special curbside pickups were also available via the Department of Public Works.
Feds to the rescue?
In the aftermath of Ida, federal relief funds may be available. So the city is asking residents to survey the damage to their properties from the storm and report it.
“As we await word on possible assistance from FEMA [the Federal Emergency Management Agency] for damage caused by Tropical Depression Ida, I felt that we should take a proactive approach and gather as much information as we can now, in the event that FEMA does provide assistance,” Davis said in a statement.
Davis has directed the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management to gather information from residents who were affected by this storm. As part of the directive, OEM will compile information and deliver it to county, state, and federal officials as soon as they request it.
“Although we aren’t certain of FEMA assistance at this point, I ask that anyone who suffered property damage during Wednesday’s storm to please fill out the form that will be available on the city’s website beginning Tuesday,” Davis said.
The form can be found at bayonnenj.org. The form must be printed, filled out, and emailed to stormida@baynj.org.
“As I have stated, at this juncture, there is no guarantee of assistance,” Davis said. “However, taking this approach will help us be in the best position if and when that assistance does come.”
On Sept. 7, Gov. Phil Murphy announced that FEMA teams will be on the ground in Hudson County, as well as Essex, Mercer, and Union counties, to evaluate damages from Ida.
