BIG RAPIDS – Candidates running in the upcoming November election are preparing for their races and there is still time for new candidates to join the competition.
Voters will decide the newest mayor and city commissioner positions in Big Rapids. There are currently two open city commissioner seats and one mayoral seat available.
The deadline for new candidates to register is set for Friday, Oct. 22.
City commissioner candidates include incumbent Jonathan Eppley, and challengers Amanda Johnson and Karen Simmon. Mayoral candidates include Big Rapids city commissioner Jennifer Cochran and Fred Guenther.
Big Rapids City Clerk Tamyra Gillis said as of Wednesday, there have not been any write-in or additional candidates added to the pool, but that there is still time for interested parties to enter the race.
The official form to register as a candidate can be found on the city’s website, www.cityofbr.org, or on the city clerk’s webpage. Prospective candidates are reminded that this form must be notarized.
For voters, being prepared and making a voting plan prior to election day can be beneficial when voting lines lengthen in November. The final day to obtain an absentee ballot is Monday, Nov. 1, and any in-person ballots cast must be completed at city hall.
In the aftermath of the 2019 November election, a total of 577 ballots were received and processed. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Big Rapids had over 10,000 residents at that time.
Results of the 2021 November election will be available online available on election night on the city’s website on the city clerk’s page.
