The Brewers took the rain-interrupted second game of the doubleheader at Wrigley Field on the strength of their recuperating bullpen and a mammoth fifth inning.
Aaron Ashby looked sharp across two innings. He logged his first MLB strikeout and sat three Cubbies in order in the first. In the second, he put up a scoreless frame, despite allowing working through some traffic. The rest of his start was washed out by an hour-and-a-half rain delay.
Hunter Strickland pitched a clean third inning, striking out the side in order with some unbelievable breaking pitches.
John Curtiss surrendered a home run to Patrick Wisdom on the first pitch of the fourth. Rafael Ortega singled and advanced to third on a steal attempt when Narváez’ throw to second got by Luis Urías. Curtiss notched a strikeout for the second out of the inning before exiting with an apparent injury, leaving Johneshwy Fargas with a full count. Miguel Sanchez came in, warmed up quickly on the game mound, and threw a single pitch to strike out Fargas to end the inning with Ortega stranded at third.
Urías set the tone for the Brewers rally in what would be a six-run fifth. He led off the inning with a bullet of a line drive to center for a double. Urías then advanced to third on a Jace Peterson groundout. Jackie Bradley Jr. plated Urías on a double to get the Brewers on the board and tie the game at 1.
JBJ then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and took off running, and scored the go-ahead run on Christian Yelich infield groundout up the middle.
Meanwhile, Avisaíl García took a painful cutter to the pinkie (ruled a foul ball) but hung through the at-bat to draw a walk. He advanced to second when Kyle Ryan walked Adames to get to Narváez, who hit a beauty of a line drive to right center to score Garcia and bring Milwaukee up 3-1.
The hit parade continued for the Brewers as Eduardo Escobar singled to score Adames. 4-1, Brewers. Rowdy Tellez singled to score Narváez. 5-1, Brewers. Luis Urías came to the plate for the second time in the inning and singled to score Escobar to bring the Brewers to a 6-1 lead at the end of the big inning.
Jake Cousins returned from his COVID-19 quarantine to his hometown ballpark. He returned to his pre-IL form, striking out two and sitting the Cubs in order in the fifth.
Angel Perdomo struggled with command in the sixth, loading the bases on walks before allowing Fargas an infield base hit that plated a run to bring the Cubs up 6-2 with the bases loaded.
Counsell brought in Brent Suter to shut down Wilson Contreras, who was pinch-hitting and representing the tying run. Suter did exactly that with high fastballs and his characteristic quick-clip delivery.
Suter returned in the seventh and worked two quick outs to open the inning. He allowed those pesky Cubs a couple two-out hits and another run before closing out the inning for the win and the doubleheader sweep.
The Brewers will try to secure the series win tomorrow, 6:05 pm at Wrigley Field.
