NEW YORK – Columbia baseball saw a large contingent of its roster compete during the summer at various collegiate leagues. In total, the Lions had players take home two team championships and another earn all-star honors.
Nate Beimel made 10 appearances for the Matsu Miners in the Alaska Collegiate League, pitching to a 2-0 record with a 1.96 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 18.1 innings. He punched out a season-high seven batters over 3.2 innings on June 15 and his longest outing of 4.2 innings came on July 13 where the left-hander fanned six.
Cole Hage also spent time up in Alaska with the Peninsula Oilers, but had his season cut short due to an injury.
Seth Dardar and Hayden Schott had big seasons for the Walnut Creek Crawdads of the California Collegiate League. Dardar hit .351 with three homers (which was seventh in the league), nine doubles and 22 RBI in 30 games. Schott saw action in 35 contests, posting a .307 average with three dingers, 22 RBI and five stolen bases.
Staying in the CCL, Brandon Madrigal made nine relief appearances, going 1-0 with 16 strikeouts in 12 innings of work for the Conejo Oaks. Another hurler, Derek Yoo, saw action in 10 games out of the bullpen for the Arroyo Seco Saints. The right-hander went 2-1, striking out 17 over 13.1, and did not allow an earned run until his seventh appearance of the summer.
John San Jule was a sparkplug for the Hamilton Joes in the Great Lakes League, compiling a .270 average with 25 runs scored, 18 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 30 contests. In the playoffs, the outfielder went 7-for-17 (.412) with four runs and three RBI to help the Joes secure the GLCL championship.
Jacob Phelps was named a Florida Gulf Coast Collegiate League All-Star after a strong campaign with the Sarasota Sawx where he also won a league title.
A trio of Lions teamed up for the Wisconsin Woodchucks in the Northwoods League. Tyler MacGregor played in 28 games, hitting .226 with a homer and 13 RBI. Sean Higgins made four appearances and picked up 14 strikeouts in 15.0 innings of work. Dane Miller got into 11 contests, going 1-1 with 18 strikeouts in 22.2 innings.
The battery of Billy Black and Weston Eberly were also in Wisconsin with the Rapids Rafters of the Northwoods League. Black got into 14 games and pitched to a 3.73 ERA with 25 K's in 31.1 innings of work. Eberly got into 45 games behind the plate and hit .245 with six doubles and nine RBI.
In the Perfect Game Collegiate League, Bobby Baxter and Josh Nam's seasons with the Newark Pilots and Saugerties Stallions were each cut short due to injury. Baxter got into five games and went 5-for-17 with five runs scored. Nam was shut down after four relief outings.
Lewis Menendez finished his third season with the Boca Raton Blazers and appeared in 31 contests. The rising senior batted .278 with 24 runs scored, a pair of homers and seven stolen bases.
