SOCCER: ESSEXVILLE GARBER 6, JOHN GLENN 1
Essexville Garber had a regular season to wrap up.
And a championship to complete.
Needing a win in the regular season finale to clinch the outright Tri-Valley East girls soccer championship, the Dukes accomplished the mission with a 6-1 victory over John Glenn.
“The Dukes had a great regular season and are looking for more magic as the postseason begins,” Garber coach Brent Betzold said.
No. 7-ranked Garber (15-2-2, 11-0-1) secured its second straight league championship, racing to a 5-0 lead by halftime in the cross-river rivalry. Tori Hatton jump-started the offense with a goal and Brooke Thompson and Ella Betzold each added two goas by halftime.
Grace Carley completed the scoring with a second-half goal for the Dukes. Logan Rau pitched the shutout in goal.
The game wasn’t a total loss for Glenn (7-9-1), which showed some grit by battling one of the state’s top teams on equal terms throughout the second half.
“We were on the verge of going home early,” Glenn coach Justin Page said. “But the girls responded in the second half and found some life.”
Garber only allowed a goal in four games this season, and Glenn accounted for two of them. Katelyn Weston got on the board this time around in an assist from Mia Wingeier. Madisen Moll was solid in goal with 12 saves for the Bobcats.
SOFTBALL: PINCONNING FINDS SPARK
After getting one-hit in an opening-game loss and sitting on one run through four innings of the nightcap, the Pinconning lineup caught fire.
The Spartans scored nine runs over the final three innings for a 10-7 victory over Ogemaw Heights, which won the opener 9-0.
Pinconning (8-19) was blanked in Game 1, getting only a double from Alexis Holstine. The Spartans were down 5-1 in the fifth inning of Game 2 before catching a spark. They scored two in the fifth and two in the sixth but were still down 7-5 coming into their final swings.
That’s when they erupted for a five-run seventh, swinging the outcome. Brooke Lavrack, Emily Deary and Madison Shoultes each rapped two hits in the win while Lavrack and Jorja Gauthier each drove in two runs. Lavrack went the distance for the pitching win.
