Flyers, which include misinformation on social media, are being distributed regarding the protest in front of Heron Bay’s South entrance. Although it isn’t in Parkland’s city limits, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is still monitoring the event.
On Monday, an online flyer distributed on social media chastises the Parkland mayor for letting the protest occur. However, the south entrance to Heron Bay is in the jurisdiction of Coral Springs, led by Mayor Scott Brook.
According to Parkland Captain Chris Mulligan, they are aware of the posts mentioning the City of Parkland.
“All of these posts are being investigated, and, at this time, we have no credible information to support the rumor that Parkland is an area of concern,” said Mulligan.
He said that as a precaution, additional staffing had been brought in to patrol the district, and they are working closely with their municipal partners in Coral Springs.
Anger has sparked after the May 25, death of George Floyd, who was suffocated by Minneapolis police, setting off protests around the world.
Another protest set in Coral Springs is scheduled in on Tuesday afternoon, organized by two students.
Broward County has issued a curfew from 9:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. This curfew will remain in effect until for the next six days.
