Plans are proceeding forward
REED CITY – The Great American Crossroads Celebration is proceeding on schedule.
GACC board member Amber Hutchinson addressed the Reed City city council at its recent meeting. Hutchinson said they are proceeding forward with the plans for the celebration at this time. The event is scheduled for Aug. 13-16.
“We have been having meetings all along during the quarantine period, and we just had our first face-to-face meeting last week,” Hutchinson said. “We really want to have this event, and of course, we are looking at all the necessary safety measures and how to proceed forward. We are still being cautious.”
Hutchinson added, they did an online poll and more than 90% of the respondents said they want to see it happen.
Some council members questioned whether they would be able to have the celebration considering the restrictions put in place from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive orders dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.
Hutchinson said they are working very hard to make sure it is done safely and that it can be done within the boundaries set forth in the executive orders.
“As we get closer, we may have to change some of the events, but overall, we would really like to see this happen,” she said. “The way we did it last year was very successful, and everything went well. This year we are more concerned with making sure it happens and making sure we have the proper sanitation protocols in place.”
Hutchinson was seeking approval for road closures on Upton, Chestnut and 15th Street, to accommodate the event. In addition, she requested approval of the application for a temporary liquor license for the beverage tent.
The requested road closures were approved unanimously.
The council approved the temporary liquor license application by a vote of 4-2, with Council members Roger Meinert and Dave Sharlow voting "no."
The "no" votes came after discussion of the possible exclusion of Reed City Brewery from the beverage tent.
According to Hutchinson, the owners of Reed City Brewery opted not to participate in the GACC.
"They received the same information as all the other businesses regarding the plans for the celebration and how they could participate," she said. "Sunny's and The Buckboard did it last year and are on board again this year."
Meinert suggested they hold the vote until they could reach out to the organization for further discussion.
“My feeling is you can not automatically exclude them, you have to give them the option,” Meinert said. “I think it is unfair to take a vote on this tonight, not knowing what their intentions are as to participate or not.”
Hutchinson said she would be glad to reach out to them again, but the temporary license application needed to be sent to the state in order to get the approval in time for the festival.
Plans for this year's festival include a car show, craft booths, a softball tournament, food trucks, rides and inflatables for the children, kickball, a 5K run, and the addition of the PT Norman High School PTO color run fundraiser.
Other events include a parade and a parking lot party.
“This is a very important event, and I am glad to see it is still going to happen in the midst of a lot of things being cancelled,” Mayor Trevor Guiles said. “It’s nice that you are working so hard to make sure that can still happen.”
“We figure that our community needs this, and that our local businesses need this,” Hutchinson said. “This year there has been so much negativity going on, we hope we an bring some positivity to Reed City.”
