Why Biden, Trump campaigns still haven't set up VP debate - New York Post

The campaigns of President Biden and former President Donald Trump have yet to agree on a date, venue or host network for a potential vice presidential debate — months after publicly exchanging initial proposals.

The status of a forum between VP Kamala Harris and a Republican to be named later has become an urgent question following Biden’s poor performance in his June 27 debate against Trump.

The major sticking point, the campaigns told The Post Monday, is which network will oversee the debate, with the Biden campaign wanting CBS News to host and the Trump campaign pushing for Fox News.

“I would point out that we were the first to accept an offer for a VP debate — from CBS for a debate on either July 23 or August 13,” a Biden campaign rep said.

“The Trump folks have not responded to CBS yet one way or the other.”

“The VP debate over [sic] we committed to is for August hosted by Fox,” Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt responded.

“We haven’t named a veep. [Trump] accepted Fox but nothing else until he names a veep,” fellow Trump rep Danielle Alvarez told The Post.

Trump, 78, is expected to name his running mate sometime before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next week.

In contrast to the VP debate being in limbo, Trump and Biden agreed quickly to take part in two debates, with the second set for Sept. 10 and hosted by ABC News.

In May, Harris rep Brian Fallon said the Biden-Harris team would accept a CBS News debate with the same rules the Biden team pushed for in his two debates with Trump; namely, no audience and muted microphones.

“The Biden-Harris campaign has informed CBS News that we accept the network’s invitation to participate in a Vice Presidential debate, in studio, on either of two dates. The two options proposed by CBS that we are able to accept are Tuesday, July 23, or Tuesday, August 13. The debate would be in accordance with the guidelines put forth by the campaign yesterday. We look forward to the Trump campaign accepting one of these dates so that the full debate calendar for this campaign can be set,” Fallon said in a statement on May 16.

Trump, meanwhile, accepted a Fox News debate the next day.

“On behalf of the future Vice President of the United States, who I have not yet chosen, we hereby accept the Fox Vice Presidential Debate, hopefully at Virginia State University, the first Historically Black College or University to host a Debate – Date to be determined,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I urge Vice President Kamala Harris to agree to this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Reps for Fox News and CBS News did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday.
