CUBS LINEUP — Well, the good news is that the Cubs have an off-day tomorrow and Dansby Swanson is targeting a Tuesday return from the IL. So no matter what, this SHOULD be the last day the Cubs middle infield includes both Nick Madrigal and Miles Mastrobuoni. But the bad news is that Nico Hoerner is still out.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Mike Tauchman, RF
- Seiya Suzuki, DH
- Cody Bellinger, CF
- Chris Morel, 3B
- Ian Happ, LF
- Michael Busch, 1B
- Nick Madrigal, 2B
- Miles Mastrobuoni, SS
- Miguel Amaya, C
The Cubs may have really fumbled the bag on this Hoerner injury. If they had simply put him on the IL immediately (or even three days later, but retroactively), they wouldn’t have played a player down for what is now at least SIX games, and could be more. And they would have gotten him back immediately after the Braves series ended (with Swanson expected back for the full series).
And since we know he’s not even “available off the bench” given the tough lefty-on-lefty at-bats Mastrobuoni has taken in some key moments late in a few recent games, you have to wonder why they think he’s close enough not to IL.
Alas.
The middle infield is the same, Tauchman is in right, Suzuki is the DH, Amaya is behind the plate, and Pete Crow-Armstrong is on the bench.
Pittsburgh Pirates Lineup:
- TBA
Pitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Jameson Taillon, RHP
Jameson Taillon was on an absolute role after a back injury delayed the start of his season, with just three earned runs over 24.0 IP. But then, his back started flaring up again which delayed his next outing … into Atlanta, where the Braves scored 7 runs in 4.0 IP.
Only two of those runs were earned, but to be fair, the unearned runs were unearned because of an error Jameson Taillon committed (and a wild pitch he uncorked). And when you add all that to a start with more walks (3) than strikeouts (2), things don’t often work out in your favor. With all that said, the Braves are the Braves. Going from facing that offense (105 wRC+ vs RHP) on the road, to the Pirates (78 wRC+) at home should be a big difference.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Mitch Keller, RHP
The Pirates began this series with two hot-shot young pitching prospects, who both dominated thoroughly. Their third pitcher, Bailey Falter, has had a good season overall and stymied the Cubs lineup yesterday. And today, they’re going with Mitch Keller, who has allowed just 1 earned run over his last 15 innings pitched.
Two starts ago, he completed nine innings against the Angels, allowing just one earned run. And he followed that up with six scoreless innings against the Brewers, who didn’t walk and struck out seven times. This might be another rough day for the Cubs lineup.
