The shrill blasts of whistles rising above the din of metal work at Floyd Stadium. Brent Dearmon yelling at his quarterbacks to keep up the pace. The subtle "thud" of Kyle Ulbrich's boot launching another punt down field. Young Jeezy's "Put On" blaring over the loudspeakers during warm-up stretches.
Yep, fall camp is back in Murfreesboro. And after a difficult 2020 season for a multitude of reasons, the Blue Raiders' head coach could barely hide his excitement to be back out on the field.
"I'll be a lot more excited tomorrow than I am today," Rick Stockstill said. "I'll be a lot more excited Sunday than I was tomorrow. I'll be a lot more excited Monday than I was Sunday. We're ready to go, the fire is burning."
Much of the first day's practice was a test of retention, seeing how much the team, particularly the offense under a new scheme from the mind of offensive coordinator Brent Dearmon, could execute the install from the spring. A test the team passed with flying colors, Stockstill said.
"I thought there was good retention, mentally, from what we've done this spring and throughout the summer, them studying on their own and working on their own," Stockstill said.
Chase Cunningham, the long-tenured Blue Raider quarterback who's competing for the starting job this camp, couldn't agree more.
"We've come so far as an offense," Cunningham said. "Our Day 1 install from (the spring) to today is just levels of improvement."
As with most early days of camps, drills were focused on technique and competition, with the required days of practice in shorts limiting the amount of full contact drills the team could partake in. Still, the wideouts were able to work on their routes, the running backs could work on their carrying skills, the defensive backs their press coverage, and so on.
On the competition side, the depth of the skill players was evident, as wideouts both veteran (Tyler Sweet) and rookie (Elijah Metcalf) made spectacular sideline catches during the first half of practice. Defensively, the defensive backfield of Gregory Grate Jr. and Reed Blankenship once again looked strong during the shell drill, with Deonte Stanley snaring a pick late in the proceedings.

The full offense and defense battle right after the shell drill was balanced in wins for each side, with Dearmon's offensive tempo taking center stage as the team quickly got to the line for each snap. Fast, Dearmon said, but not fast enough.
"The big coaching point from today was emphasizing tempo," Dearmon said. "I thought our guys did a great job with play recognition and running their assignment, but we just weren't fast enough. So we're going to continue with that key word being tempo."
Overall, though, the depth of the 2021 Blue Raiders was evident, and makes the prospect of following the various camp battles all the more intriguing as the team moves towards its season opener.
"We've just got to continue to be consistent in everything we do everyday," Stockstill said. "And don't worry about being better than anybody but what you were yesterday."
