A couple of months ago, I suggested that Tennessee should replace Peyton Manning with Alvin Kamara as the “face” of Vols football.
The premise is simple — Kamara is more recognizable to kids on the recruiting trail.
In fact, Kamara is one of the more recognizable faces in the NFL.
Unsurprisingly, I received some nasty comments for my suggestion that Manning should be replaced by Kamara.
I wasn’t suggesting that Tennessee should disavow Peyton or quit featuring the Hall of Fame quarterback. That would be asinine to suggest.
Manning is one of the greatest football players of all time. He’s just not someone that the high school players of today great up watching.
Now, with that said, Manning and the history of the Power T still mean something on the recruiting trail (perhaps more than I realized).
And that was evidenced this week by comments made by 2023 offensive lineman Paris Patterson Jr (who received an offer from the Vols recently).
“I don’t know a whole lot right now, to be honest, but I’m ready to learn more…Peyton Manning played there and the school has won about six National Championships,” said Patterson to VolQuest.
Despite the Vols’ struggles over the last 15 years, the history of the Power T still holds strong. Recruits still reconize that Tennessee is an iconic program that has the resources to be among the best in college football.
That means that no matter how bad things get on Rocky Top, the potential to turn things around quickly is always there.
Tennessee probably won’t start landing five-star recuirts over Alabama anytime soon, but there are still plenty of talented players who want to come to Knoxville.
And that’s good news for the future of the program under Josh Heupel.
