The Indianapolis Colts got back into the playoffs just one year after the Andrew Luck debacle by bringing in Philip Rivers. The veteran signal-caller didn’t put up eye-popping numbers in his first year away from the Los Angeles Chargers but his team’s stellar defense and wealth of running backs was enough to get by in the AFC South.
The Colts surprisingly had one of the best defenses through the first half of the year. The seemingly washed Xavier Rhodes gave the secondary a huge boost while Darius Leonard and DeForest Buckner held down the line of scrimmage. Jonathan Taylor didn’t emerge as a true feature back until long after Marlon Mack’s season-ending Achilles injury and the rookie received plenty of support from Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins.
The Colts still need to find their quarterback of the future and could need to find a replacement for Rivers, who signed a one-year deal for the 2020 season. It’s unlikely that Indianapolis will be able to draft a starter in 2021 so they’re more likely to acquire one through a trade or free agency if need be.
2021 opponents
The Indianapolis Colts will face their AFC South divisional opponents six times, half at home and half on the road. In addition, they draw matchups against all for teams from the AFC East and NFC West. The NFL is expected to add a 17th game to the regular season schedule that will feature an inter-conference matchup with a similarly placed team. The Colts would face the NFC South.
