Even though Gov. Gavin Newsom lifted stay-home orders across the state, a travel advisory discouraging people from traveling more than 120 miles from home remains in effect.

In an email to The Chronicle, the California Department of Public Health confirmed that its travel advisory, updated on Jan. 6, still stands. It urges Californians to forgo non-essential travel and avoid leaving the state.

“Avoiding travel reduces the risk of virus transmission, including by reducing the risk that new sources of infection and, potentially, new virus strains will be introduced to California,” it reads.

It also “strongly” discourages non-essential travelers from coming into California and adds that, if they do, they should quarantine for at least 10 days upon arrival.

On Monday, Newsom abruptly lifted stay-home orders in place in the Bay Area and across much of the state as the post-holiday rise in new coronavirus cases began to subside. In terms of reopening, individual counties are reverting to the state’s system of color-coded tiers.
