ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Rather than the supply of COVID-19 vaccines, the focus of Tuesday’s weekly conversation with Dr. Cynthia Morrow was on who is getting the vaccines in our area, and when.
“We continue to urge patience and flexibility,” said Morrow.
Before the vaccine arrived in Virginia, a phase system was put in place.
The VDH reports that as of January 4, just over 104,000 people have been vaccinated.
Those people include health care workers at major hospitals and private practitioners. We also know long term care facility residents are included in phase 1A, thanks to a partnership with two pharmacy chains.
As of now, the numbers of residents who have been vaccinated are still being added into VDH data.
“In the state all health districts and all health care delivery systems should still be in phase 1A, this is intended to be a coordinated state wide response, the governor, the governors’ office will make an announcement, or VDH will made an announcement, I’m not sure which, when local health districts can move to phase 1B; that has not happened,” said Morrow.
Dr. Morrow also addressed the accuracy of the number of vaccines given statewide, saying it’s likely the numbers are being under-reported for two reasons:
“One is distribution delays, but shots are getting into arms, and two, reporting delays.”
And as far as moving into phase 1B goes, Dr. Morrow was not able to provide a timetable.
We know that essential workers and residents over the age of 75 will be included in phase 1B, but the official phase guidance has not been established.
