CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs and Tennessee State Tigers renew a spirited rivalry Tuesday afternoon in Nashville. While there are just 35 total meetings, it was a premier matchup "back in the day".

The Mocs and Tigers squared off 24 times over an 11-year stretch from the start of the 1971-72 campaign through Dec. 1983. The names included Moose McGary, Wayne Golden, William Gordon and Willie White for the good guys and Lloyd Neal, Monti Davis and long-time NBA power forward Truck Robinson from TSU.

The two met a year ago in Chattanooga for game two. The Mocs came back from a 13-point first half deficit to get the 59-57 victory. A late three from Matt Ryan '20 and smart defensive play by A.J. Caldwell keyed the win. Links to the story and complete coverage are below.

Both teams are coming off Saturday wins. Chattanooga was victorious at UAB, 69-66, while TSU cruised past Crowley's Ridge 90-68. It's the second OVC matchup for the Scenic City crew who were triumphant, 62-54, at Tennessee Tech in November.

The Mocs win in Birmingham pushed them to 8-0 matching the top start in school history (1973-74). Chattanooga, Drake and Xavier are the only 8-0 teams in the country. The squad is one of 30 remaining unbeaten teams heading into Monday's games.

Malachi Smith leads the way averaging 15.6 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He's tied for the national lead in double-doubles with six. Stefan Kenić adds 12.8 points per contest. Mark Freeman paces the Tigers at 17.0 points per game.

The contest is on ESPN+ along with WFLI 97.7 FM/1070 AM in Chattanooga as well as the TuneIn app.
