The final pieces to a major upgrade at James A. Cox Park in Jasper were put in place Monday when state Sen. Greg Reed presented city leaders a $3,000 check to complete work that’s been going on for the past few months.

Reed presented the funds to Jasper Mayor David O’Mary and District 5 council member Willie Moore at the park, more commonly known as Frisco Park.

Reed, O’Mary and Moore took the opportunity Monday to look over the upgrades at the park, which include state-of-the-art playground equipment, new landscaping and a pavilion that can be used for numerous events.

The project began after Moore approached O’Mary nearly a year ago with a request for a new playground at the park. They then met with and gained the approval of the city council.

Next, the city began to seek partners to complete the project. O’Mary said the first call was to Reed’s office in Montgomery.

“We have always been able to count on Senator Reed whenever we have had the need to call on him,” O’Mary said. “He does a superb job of representing us in Montgomery, and has an invaluable network that he can call on in almost any situation to offer aid and assistance on a project.”

“What we are doing here today is certainly one of the more enjoyable things I get to do as a senator,” Reed said. “I am always excited when I can be a part of working with local leadership to help improve quality of life for Jasper residents. I am very proud to be part of this project.”

Moore said he was thrilled to see the project nearing completion.

“I am really proud of this park renovation. A lot of hard work has gone into putting this together,” Moore said. “This will give our children a safe place to play and families a place to gather that they can be proud of. I want to thank Senator Reed, Mayor O’Mary and all of the groups that have come forward to support this in our community.”

O’Mary also praised Moore for his work to better his district.

“I want to commend him for stepping up for his district,” O’Mary said. “He and I came into office at the same time, and from Day 1he’s had a sharp eye for the needs in his district. Not only has he had a sharp eye for it, he’s done something about it. This project today is a manifestation of that.”

Other work at the park includes a new gym floor inside the Percy Goode Community Center, as well as upgrades at the nearby pool.

“He’s really a great example of people who step forward to represent the people in his district,” the mayor said in commending Moore.

Initial grant funds for the project were approved after Reed’s office put the city in touch with the Cawaco Research, Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council. Funding from Cawaco allowed the playground to add landscaping, sidewalks and seating areas to the park.

The project has been a partnership since its inception, with funding and labor coming from the city, as well as Cawaco RC&D, the Walker Area Community Foundation and Reed’s office.

Reed said he had an opportunity to impact the project in two ways. First, by assisting with financial resources and second by recruiting Cawaco to get involved in the project.

“I knew how important this project was to the city,” Reed said. “One thing that I think is so unique to this is that outdoor activities for people in our communities are as important now as ever before. I think this is a great use of resources to be able to do that.”

Reed commended the city for its work with its parks program, specifically with upgrades and beautification projects at parks across the city. He added that he “was really glad to be involved with it.”
