The global COVID-19 pandemic continued to dent Vietnam’s fisheries exports in June, with value down 10% to $626 million, reports Vietnam Plus, citing the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
That followed a 16% decline in May. For the full first half of 2020, sales were down 10% year-on-year.
Pangasius has been the hardest-hit, with sales down 31%. Tuna exports are down 20% in value. Only shrimp has seen an increase, of 3% y-o-y.
The EU market has been the hardest for Vietnam, with sales down 35%. Exports to the US are down just 6%, while those to ASEAN nations are down 17%. Chinese sales have fallen just 3% too. Small increases were seen in only a few small markets, such as the UK and Canada.
VASEP is not optimistic about fishery demand recovering around the world given that COVID-19 remains a major concern in markets such as the US, the EU, and China. Stricter import regulations in China will also impact Vietnam’s exports, as well as product prices, it said.
