The new intersection improvement project at Corinth, Belk and Smokey roads is nearing completion.
The two new traffic signals along Smokey Road are now in “flash mode” operation. The signals are set to go into regular operation on Thursday.
While the signals are in flash mode, the intersections should be treated as an all-way stop, according to county officials.
The two intersections – Smokey Road and Old Corinth Road, and Smokey Road and Belk Road – have been moved farther apart and both will now be controlled by a traffic light.
Belt Road was moved slightly east and aligned with the residential street Meadow Sweet Lane, which was moved a bit to the west to line up with Belk.
The Old Corinth and Smokey intersection was changed dramatically. Old Corinth Road now comes into Smokey west of where it used to, behind the CBS store. A building which had served as multiple sports bars/taverns over the years was demolished as part of the project. Though the road work didn’t directly impact the facility, it did impact its overflow parking. The last tenant for the facility was Hoops Sports Bar, which had been closed since 2017.
The old intersection of Old Corinth and Smokey won’t be completely closed. Instead, it will function as a “right in” only, once all work is complete.
Though most paving is done and the signals are going into full operation, “the contractor still has to tie in several driveways with asphalt, build shoulders, install signs, install stirping, dress up and clean up the project and plant grass,” said Tod Handley, Coweta’s public works director.
The contractor for the project, E.R. Snell, was given 450 days to complete the project. That 450-day limit was up at the end of June, Handley said. However, the contractor has requested a time extension because of delays with utility relocation and the extremely wet winter and early spring.
The project has been in the works for many years – an open house on the proposed design was held in 2014.
In 2017, plans were tweaked slightly after residents expressed concerns about the project. The Old Corinth Road realignment was altered slightly to save a large portion of the front yard of one home on Old Corinth. Portions of the project were also converted to curb-and-gutter sections to narrow the amount of right-of-way needed.
Neighbors found out about the project when they received letters about needed right-of-way. Many in the area said they had seen signs for the open house three years earlier, but hadn’t paid much attention. Others said they knew nothing about the open house.
A total of 23 parcels were affected under the original plans.
