Despite a shortened regular season and modified Stanley Cup Playoffs, NHL players are still expected to be paid their scheduled signing bonuses on July 1. In total, over $300 million is due to players, according to ESPN.
The NHL and NHLPA came to the agreement to not defer the payments on Tuesday, ESPN reported. The Toronto Maple Leafs lead the league with the most to pay out with $60 million. According to CapFriendly.com, Leafs star Auston Matthews will receive $15.2 million, the largest payment in the league.
Matthews' teammate Mitch Marner is next highest on the list with $14.3 million, followed by Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid ($13 million) and New York Rangers Artemi Panarin ($12 million).
The signing bonus talks between the league and player's union is on part of the ongoing collective bargaining agreement negotiations. It's expected that a new CBA agreement between both sides will be announced soon, according to ESPN.
The NHL plans to enter Phase 3 of the return to play on July 10, which involves the players reporting to training camp. The start date of Phase 4, the return to play, is not yet decided because it depends on how smoothly Phase 3 goes.
Since Phase 2 of the return to play plan began, 26 NL players have tested positive for COVID-19.
