Joey Gallo, Ronald Guzman still in Rangers’ COVID-19 testing process - The Dallas Morning News

Rangers right-fielder Joey Gallo and first-baseman Ronald Guzman are still amid the COVID-19 intake process, and are not cleared to participate.

Rangers President of Baseball Operations Jon Daniels updated their status on Sunday morning, but couldn’t provide many details about why the process has taken so much longer for these two. Texas is on its third day of training camp.

“Hopefully we’ll have information here very soon,” Daniels said. “But we don’t have all the testing back yet, amongst some other things that need to happen before we can address whether they’re able to join us here at the facility.

“There are times when the process goes smoothly and it’s step one, step two, step three. And there are times, because of other things that it’s taking quite a bit longer.”

When asked whether the Rangers still just had one positive test -- lefty reliever Brett Martin has COVID-19 -- Daniels declined to answer.

“I don’t have any plans to announce how many positives we have,” he said. “I prefer not to.”

On Saturday, for the second consecutive day, neither Gallo nor Guzman participated in workouts with the team after baseball’s four-month shutdown. Neither player appeared on the field during the three-hour window the workout was open to media.

Daniels said Sunday morning that Guzman was at the facility, and was allowed to be there, but hadn’t been cleared to play. He added that, in this case, there is a difference between being allowed at the field and being allowed to compete in camp.

According to health privacy laws, the Rangers may not disclose that a player has the coronavirus without first obtaining the player’s permission. Martin acknowledged Friday that he has the virus but said he was feeling significantly better. A handful of players on other teams, including Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman, also confirmed they had tested positive for the virus.

It is unclear if either Gallo or Guzman tested positive, and is taking a second test to confirm the initial result. Daniels didn’t rule that out.

“That’s one of many, many things that could happen in the process,” Daniels said. “On a lot of these, we’re at the -- they’re not our decisions, basically, if things are needed to follow up on, then we’ve got to wait on that.”

On Friday, the Rangers acknowledged that 42 of 56 players who had reported for camp had worked out. On Saturday, the number absent seemed to be eight. Five of those players had been on a charter flight from Latin America that didn’t get them to Texas until Wednesday evening. They did not start testing protocols until Thursday.

If a player tests positive for the virus, he must be fever-free and test negative twice over a period of at least 24 hours before he can be permitted to rejoin the team.
