Coronavirus: Hospitalization still on the rise in state because of pandemic - East Bay Times

California continued to record highs in the number of patients hospitalized or in intensive care unit beds with COVID-19, but positive cases overall decreased Saturday, according to data compiled by this news organization.

The state reported a record high of 6,357 patients hospitalized with the novel coronavirus, according to the latest available data. Another 1,547 patients were hospitalized with suspected but not yet confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Officials also reported a record high with 1,806 patients in ICU beds with the virus. Another 215 patients were in ICU beds with suspected COVID-19 cases.

County health agencies reported 6,992 new coronavirus cases Saturday for a statewide total of 317,167 positive results since the start of the global pandemic. The seven-day average is 9,418 cases.

California also passed the 7,000 mark for deaths from the virus with county health officials reporting 72 fatalities on Saturday.

Not all counties updated their data over the weekend.

Many of the new cases are in Southern California, led by Los Angeles County with 2,884 new cases and 55 new deaths. Orange County reported 1,251 new cases and nine deaths.

San Bernardino County had 637 news cases and no deaths Saturday while San Diego County had 508 new cases and two deaths. Riverside County last updated its data on Friday when reporting 1,431 new cases and four deaths.

Imperial Valley has California’s worst death rate per 100,000 people at 70.4 deaths. Officials there reported 68 new cases Saturday and three deaths.

Los Angeles County has the state’s second-worst death rate at 37 deaths per 100,000 people. San Mateo County tops Bay Area counties with a rate of 14.4 deaths per 100,000 people.

In the Bay Area, Alameda County reported the highest number of new cases in the region — 240 positive results for a total of 7,725 coronavirus cases. Officials reported one death for a total of 148 deaths. The county abruptly curtailed outdoor dining Friday after saying it had suddenly learned of new state restrictions.

Contra Costa County, which tightened restrictions Saturday on outdoor dining and activities and worship, recorded 145 news cases for a total of 4,605. Contra Costa also had one death Saturday for a total of 89 deaths as a result of COVID-19.

Santa Clara County reported 126 new cases Saturday for a total of 5,983. Officials did not report any new deaths. San Mateo County had 103 new cases for a total of 3,949. It also did not report any new deaths. San Francisco, which had paused much of its reopening plan because of the recent increase in cases, had 96 new cases and no new deaths. San Francisco had reported 75 more cases on Friday.
