ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's tennis head coach Ronni Bernstein announced the additions of Merri Kelly and Gala Mesochoritou to the 2020-21 roster on Tuesday (June 23). The two additions, along with fall signees Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller, combine to form the No. 6-ranked recruiting class from tennisrecruiting.net.
"I am really excited about this group," Bernstein said. "They will give us a lot of depth up and down the singles lineup, as well as on the doubles court. They really fit what we are about here at Michigan and think they will be able to immediately make an impact."
Kelly, a five-star recruit from Oyster Bay, New York, is ranked as the No. 46 senior in the 2020 class. The No. 4-ranked recruit from the state of New York, Kelly won the 2019 Nassau singles championship as a senior after also winning as a freshman in 2016 before taking two seasons off from high school tennis. During her final season at Cold Spring Harbor, she finished third in the 2019 NYSPHSAA state championships. She also advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament as a freshman in 2016.
Mesochoritou hails from Thessalonkiki, Greece, where she played for her country in the National Championship in Switzerland. She also was a member of the Girls 18 Europe Summer Cup team in 2019, winning three matches as Greece finished runner-up in the consolation draw. She won her first WTA points at a tournament in Israel and won her first ITF junior tennis title in Malta, taking the Under 18 World Ranking Tournament in March of 2018.
Miller (Ann Arbor) currently is ranked No. 5 in the senior class, with Brown (Granger, Indiana) coming in at No. 11 to complete the No. 6-ranked recruiting class. It is Michigan's highest ranked class since hauling in the No. 3-ranked group in 2015 and Bernstein's sixth top-10 class.
The quartet will join Michigan for the 2020-21 season, with U-M losing two seniors to graduation. Chiara Lommer will return to use her final year of eligibility as she pursues a master's of management from the Ross School of Business.
