The transformation of an 118-year-old building in Newark will soon be complete.

The Hahne & Co. building, which was once an iconic downtown Newark department store, and then a shuttered relic before it was turned into a mixed-use complex with residences and an arts and culture center operated by Rutgers University-Newark, is now 100% leased, according to a statement from the companies that own the building.

Its latest tenant, KBG Korean BBQ & Grill, has signed a lease to take the last remaining 1,932 square feet of space on the ground floor of the building on the corner of Halsey and New streets.

KBG is a fast-casual restaurant with three other locations across New Jersey (Princeton, Hillsborough, and New Brunswick) that is similar to Chipotle in the way its customers can build their own meals with any combination of ingredients that they want.

The Newark location is expected to open later this year or early next year, the developers said.

“We are excited to welcome KBG as the latest and final addition to Hahne & Co.,” L+M Development Partners Director Jake Pine said in a statement. “The new restaurant cements Halsey Street as the ‘Eat Street’ of Downtown Newark, drawing in both the local community, as well as visitors to the neighborhood. We look forward to having people stop in and try KBG’s delicious Korean BBQ for themselves.”

Hahne’s department store closed its doors in 1987, and stood vacant for 30 years until early 2017 when it was reopened as a mixed-use enclave of apartments, shops and educational space after an extensive overhaul by L+M, Prudential and Goldman Sachs UIG.

The development includes 160 apartments, 65 of them affordable units, shops, eateries, a Barnes & Noble, an Urgent Care and a Whole Foods.

Its other newest tenant will be Ani Ramen, an award-winning craft ramen and Japanese Izakaya restaurant group, that is set to open its largest location to date in late 2020 or early 2021.
