Major League Baseball will launch its 2020 amateur draft on Wednesday, June 10, and will complete the five-round sprint on Thursday, June 11. The spread of the novel coronavirus required the draft to be held virtually instead of in Omaha, Nebraska alongside the College World Series. The owners' desire to slash costs, meanwhile, led to the draft being shortened from 40 rounds to five.

With the eighth pick of the 2020 draft, the San Diego Padres selected center fielder Robert Hassell III out of Independence High School in Tennessee, the first prep player taken. He was the No. 20 overall prospect on R.J. Anderson's big board. Here's Anderson's take on Hassell:
Hassell, another well-regarded Vanderbilt commitment, is a legit prospect as a pitcher and outfielder. Evaluators favor him at the plate, where he employs an aesthetically pleasing left-handed swing that some believe will eventually produce above-average power. He has some backers in the industry who think he could become the best hitter in the class, and it shouldn't surprise anyone if he goes higher than expected come draft day.
