STURGIS, S.D. — It was a hot day Saturday, but not hot enough to deter hikers from completing the Volksmarch in Sturgis.
This year’s hike took participants on a trail just recently opened to the public.
“Two hours and 34 minutes”.
“Two hours and 5 minutes”.
“Two and a half hours”.
“Hour and a half”.
Times did not matter as 164 hikers joined the annual Volksmarch.
“It’s not a race,” said Irene Ward, a Black Hills Volksport Association Member. “It’s just a fun thing to go out and do together, either alone or together with your family or if you have a pet.”
Participants had the option of walking a five mile trail or a 10 mile hike. Signs peppered throughout the walk made it easy to stay on course. Both paths were along scenic routes.
“If you take the 5K route, it’ll take you up to the Sturgis dams,” said Veronica Grosek, the Director of the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce. “If you take the 10K route, you’ll do the Sturgis Dams and then you’ll do an additional spur up to a really beautiful overlook of Bear Butte.
The event is sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association, an organization which celebrated its 35th anniversary earlier this year. Pegged as the people’s march, hikers in Sturgis were able to enjoy a brand new trail system.
“It’s a little bit loose but over by the dams there’s a little bit more elevation to go up and down,” said hiker John Eining.
“It was a little slippery there’s a lot of loose gravel but it was nice,” said hiker Martie Bohls.
“Yeah it was very nice,” said hiker Dodey Manley. “They keep it up. It was well marked and it was a very nice trail for anybody to walk.”
To ensure everyone returned safely from the trails, hikers had to report back to the registration table.
Sturgis is expected to host the Volksmarch again in June of 2021.
