JC Penney has announced its first phase of 154 stores closures as it navigates its way through bankruptcy.
In a bankruptcy court filing Thursday, the company identified the stores for the first round of closures. A second round will include as many as 100 other locations, leaving about 600 stores open. Four of the closing locations are in Alabama: Covington Mall in Andalusia; Regency Square in Florence; Jackson Square in Scottsboro; and Spanish Fort Town Center in Spanish Fort.
Closures sales at the location are slated to being June 12. The first round of closures could take up to four months.
“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” said Jill Soltau, chief executive officer of JCPenney.
