The Packers’ offense is in the midst of an identity crisis.
For more than a decade, that identity could really be summed up by two words: “Aaron” and “Rodgers.” Whatever version of Rodgers they had as he first matured into an elite QB and then aged, the offense hinged on his abilities.
Now, they’re not quite there yet. Jordan Love doesn’t look like he can carry the offense, AJ Dillon has gotten the chance but has come up short, and Aaron Jones hasn’t really been healthy enough to give it a shot. All that leads to significant questions about both who the Packers are and what they’re trying to be.
The answers to that question aren’t clear. Some of them depend on the health of the players involved. Christian Watson, for instance, has been seemingly underutilized when healthy this year, and the “when healthy” portion of his season has been minimal. Others depend on some kind of stabilizing effort from Jordan Love, and at best he’s been inconsistent this year, even on a drive-to-drive basis. Then you’ve got the apparent playcalling issues from Matt LaFleur, who seems to both not trust his QB and battles the urge to ask too much of him.
It all adds up to an offense that doesn’t seem to know what it is in the slightest, and that means we’re likely to continue to see some disjointed performances on that side of the ball.
The Packers came out of Sunday’s game determined to go deep more often, success rate notwithstanding.
One thing seems clear from the Packers’ early work this season: Dontayvion Wicks needs more playing time.
You can say this of the 2023 Packers: they’re not backing down when things get rough, and they’ve been rough a lot this year.
I take some issue with characterizing this as a “strong defensive performance;” the Broncos scored on five of their eight meaningful drives, including four drives of 50 yards or more. But they still only gave up 19 points, which should be enough to win.
Catching a 283-pound fish is noteworthy, of course, but don’t sleep on the nugget in this story that the angler’s guide was named Kirk Kirkland.
