The 6-4, 320-pounder spent six seasons with the Golden Gophers, including a redshirt year in 2017 and five on the field. Schmitz played in 57 games with 35 starts and started all 31 games in which he played in his final three seasons.
The Chicago native graduated with a degree in sport management and was named Academic All-Big Ten in five consecutive seasons (2018-22). Schmitz was the fifth Gopher ever to be both an All-American for his play on the field and an Academic All-American, joining Bob Hobert (1956), Bob Stein (1968), Greg Eslinger (2004, 2005), and Maxx Williams (2014).
In 2022, Schmitz started all 12 regular-season games at center. He opted out of the Pinstripe Bowl and accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl. Schmitz was selected AP and FWAA first-team All-America and voted first-team All-Big Ten by coaches and media.
Schmitz blocked for an offense that rushed for 2,698 yards and 33 touchdowns and passed for 2,369 yards and 12 scores. The Gophers gained at least 400 yards in five games, including a season-high 679 yards vs. Western Illinois.
The rest of the Giants' draft class includes cornerback Deonte Banks of Maryland (first round), wide receiver Jalin Hyatt of Tennessee (third), running back Eric Gray of Oklahoma (fifth), cornerback Tre Hawkins of Old Dominion (sixth) and defensive tackle Jordon Riley of Oregon and safety Gervarrius Owens of Houston (seventh).
