Best available prospects for Cowboys on Day 2 of NFL draft - The Dallas Morning News

susukema.blogspot.com

Cowboys beat writer Calvin Watkins lists his best available players for the Cowboys on Day 2 of the NFL draft. Dallas has two picks Friday, one in the second round (58th overall) and one in the third round (90th overall).

Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame

Some thought he would become the first tight end taken Thursday. So with the Cowboys seeking a tight end on Day 2, here’s your chance. He’s a good route runner who caught 67 passes for 809 yards and nine touchdowns last season.

Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa

The Cowboys had a private workout with LaPorta and one team official used the word “love” when talking about him. LaPorta might be a high second-round pick, so the possibility of moving up to get him is something to explore.

Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia

This 6-7, 264-pounder was part of the 30 visits teams can have with draft prospects. Washington was a second-team All-SEC selection in 2022. He caught just 28 passes for 454 yards and two touchdowns. The upside is there.

Steve Avila, G/C, TCU

Avila (South Grand Prairie) mainly played center at TCU, but NFL teams have told him he will play guard at the next level. He’s another player with a possible high second-round grade. Avila performed well at the Senior Bowl, an all-star game that normally brings a prospect to the Cowboys.

O’Cyrus Torrence, G, Florida

As the team seeks a left guard, Torrence is someone worth watching. He’s made 23 starts the last two seasons at right guard. He’s a transfer from the University of Louisiana and proved he can step up to Power Five competition.

Jalin Hyatt, WR, Tennessee

Hyatt might have fallen out of the first round for a number of reasons. While the Cowboys didn’t necessarily need to find a receiver in the first round, getting Hyatt on Day 2 would be fantastic.

Trenton Simpson, ILB, Clemson

He was a third-team All-ACC selection in 2022. He finished with 72 tackles, 2 1/2 sacks with three pass breakups. Simpson is a player who can play off the ball and is a good special teams addition.

Kendre Miller, RB, TCU

Miller was a first-team All-Big 12 pick with 1,399 rushing yards. Miller had five consecutive 100-yard games last year. He’s a player who can back up Tony Pollard and participate on special teams.

Joey Porter Jr., CB, Penn State

He’s got the size (6-2 1/2, 193 pounds) and the pedigree (father was former NFL player Joey Porter) you’re looking for. Last season he had 11 pass breakups in 10 games and was named first-team All-Big Ten.

Jaquelin Roy, DT, LSU

If you want depth along the defensive line, then get Roy, a player the Cowboys brought in for a 30 visit. Last season he had 49 tackles with 3 1/2 tackles for loss.
