GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Cardinal started hot on the first day of the NC State/GAC Invite, claiming two relay victories, four event titles, and eight top-three finishes in just the first five events on day one of the meet.
"It's great being out here in Greensboro," said the Paul A. Violich Director of Women's Swimming and Diving Greg Meehan. "It's a long trip for us and requires adjusting to East Coast time very quickly, but that's good for us as we travel a lot throughout our season. To come out here and compete against teams like NC State and Duke is great for us. We had some really awesome performances across the board from our freshmen and our returners with a lot of them being faster here than they were last year."
Stanford brought the speed immediately, taking first place in the 200 medley relay to get the meet started. Torri Huske, Taylor Ruck, Emma Wheel, and Claire Curzan combined for 1:25.90 in the event, nearly two seconds ahead of NC State in second place.
It also marked Stanford's best time in the event by a wide margin this season as well as an NCAA A Standard time.
"For that quartet to come out there and be a second faster than we went at the NCAA Championships last year is pretty awesome," said Meehan. "It's the full range of a fifth year in Taylor, a senior in Emma, a sophomore in Torri, and a freshman in Claire. To see that group stand up there and go that fast is awesome."
Amy Tang, Anna Shaw, Lucie Nordmann, and Kirsti McEnroe combine to take sixth overall while racing as Stanford's B relay with a time of 1:30.83.
The Cardinal brought the fire to the 500 free, with four of the top-five spots belonging to Stanford. Morgan Tankersley finished second overall with a 4:41.87, with Aurora Roghair, Natalie Mannion, and Lillie Nordmann following just behind in third through fifth.
"Some of our freshmen have been spectacular," added Meehan. "Natalie Mannion, Claire Curzan, got things going for us with good swims this morning."
Stanford's second event title of the meet came in the 200 IM, as Torri Huske dropped 2.52 seconds off her prelims time to snag the gold medal with a 1:53.37. Freshman Lucy Bell also scored points in the A final, taking fifth overall.
Claire Curzan, Torri Huske, and Taylor Rucke swept the podium spots in the 50 free, finishing with times of 21.55, 21.63, and 21.93 respectively. Emma Wheal and Amy Tang rounded out the A final for the Cardinal in seventh and eighth, making it five swimmers in the top heat.
The first day of the meet finished with another Stanford relay victory, as the Cardinal beat NC State by nearly three seconds. Claire Curzan, Sam Tadder, Torri Huske, and Taylor Ruck combined for a 3:26.97, good for an NCAA A Standard cut.
"To finish the session with the medley relay, with Allie Raab injured for us, we really look forward to having her race breaststroke for us again, but those that have stepped into that role have done a tremendous job," added Meehan. "Sam Tadder, Lucy Bell, and Gigi Johnson all had great swims in the breaststroke legs tonight."
Stanford also earned sixth place with its B relay in the 400 medley, as Alex Crisera, Lucy Bell, Emma Wheal, and Lillie Nordmann finished with a 3:35.53.
At the Texas Diving Invite, Maria Papworth, Emilie Moore, and Lauren Burch each competed in the 3-meter. Papworth led the way for the Cardinal, taking 17th overall with a score of 280.
Moore finished 20th overall with a 273.10, and Burch snagged 23rd with a 249.05.
"It was a really great day," said Meehan. "We've got four sessions to go and we've got to be ready to come in tomorrow morning and get after it."
