If there was a single over-arching theme of the premiere episode of House of the Dragon, it might have been a simple one: “We're back!” Presenting blood, dragons, and luminous Targaryen wigs, the first episode of the long-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel took pains to bring viewers right back into the world of Westeros.
But, as hosts Richard Lawson and Josh Wigler discuss on this week’s Still Watching, the real world has changed a bit since Game of Thrones ended in 2019, and what viewers expect has probably changed too. Below, they break down the premiere episode and all its promise, including a compelling heroine in Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) and the foreboding promise of just how bad a guy Matt Smith’s Daemon Targaryen will turn out to be. They also ponder what might come next, both based on Josh’s knowledge of the books and what this Game of Thrones follow-up knows it has to deliver to its audience.
