Happy Monday, Birmingham! As we welcome a new week in The Magic City (hopefully with more sunshine), we’re bringing you recent buzzy, positive happenings from around the city. Read on to learn more about Freshwater Land Trust’s Hugh Kaul Trail, a new city-wide trash pickup system, new openings and more.
As usual, we’ve got you covered with the hottest new openings and businesses coming soon. Let’s dive in.
Now Open
Coming Soon
- A new Cahaba Cycles location is being developed in Pelham for all your bike needs, from repairs to finding a new ride.
- Village Apothecary has a new studio space opening soon for their handmade nature/nostalgia-inspired candles. Stay tuned for grand opening info.
What’s happening: On August 26, Freshwater Land Trust officially opened the last segment of the Hugh Kaul Trail, extending from Avondale’s 41st Street to historic Continental Gin.
Why it’s important: This new trail provides an amazing way for Birmingham to explore the outdoors and commute to work. Plus, it’s all part of Freshwater Land Trust’s Red Rock Trail System, a 10-year master plan to build 750 miles of trails throughout Jefferson County, including Downtown Birmingham.
We love to bring you all the hottest new openings, but sadly we have to bring you closings as well. It’s time to bid farewell to these Birmingham businesses:
- Golden Rule BBQ in Trussville has closed its doors due to unique challenges drawing customers in.
- Smokin’ Hot Sports Grill, a family-owned and operated restaurant, closed on August 14 due to staffing shortages after five years in business.
- Carrigan’s has closed the doors on their Mountain Brook location, which opened in 2019.
- Ghost Train Brewing Co. is saying goodbye to its original First Ave. facility, moving production to its new location. Uproot Brewing is coming soon to take its place.
What’s happening: The Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, a longtime organization that moves Birmingham forward through a diverse group of business, civic and community leaders, has added six new inductees to their Business Hall of Fame. Here are the 2022 inductees:
- Dr. Kirkwood R. Balton, Booker T. Washington Insurance Co.
- Thomas E. Jernigan, Marathon Corporation
- Dr. Judy M. Merritt, Jefferson State Community College
- Claude B. Nielsen, Coca-Cola Bottling Company UNITED
- David W. Wood II, Wood Fruitticher Grocery Company
- John H. Wood, Wood Fruitticher Grocery Company
Why it matters: The Kiwanis Club of Birmingham established the Birmingham Business Hall of Fame in 1997 to recognize Birmingham leaders who have helped build a stronger community, economy and workforce.
What’s happening: The City of Birmingham is launching a new $6.5 million trash pickup system where 100,000 large trash bins will be purchased, assembled and distributed to every residential home in the city. The 96-gallon garbage carts keep trash protected from animals and weather elements.
Why it matters: This is a major step up to align Birmingham with the best practices of most US cities when it comes to trash pickup. This new project will lead to less litter and trash scattered across the city. The new system should be fully implemented by 2024.
