Game 2: Farmingdale State - 5, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn - 3

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team improved to 20-3 overall (11-1 Skyline) with a doubleheader sweep over visiting St. Joseph's-Brooklyn this afternoon. FSC took both games by a score of 5-3 behind complete game wins from pitchers Allie Stanya (Manorville, N.Y.) and Ava Shorr (North Babylon, N.Y.).

The Rams scored a pair of runs in both the first and second innings of game one to jump out to a 4-0 advantage. Senior catcher Lyndsey Shaw (Sayville, N.Y.) led off with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice by senior center fielder Priscilla Rivera (Brentwood, N.Y.). Later in the inning, Rivera scored on an RBI single by sophomore third baseman Angelina Capuano (Sayville, N.Y.).

Farmingdale State used an RBI sacrifice bunt from Stanya and a run-scoring triple from sophomore right fielder Jenna Giliberti (Bellmore, N.Y.) in the second to go in front, 4-0.

St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (17-9, 5-7 Skyline) sophomore center fielder Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y.) helped cut their deficit to just one after tallying a pair of RBI triples (in the third and fifth innings) before scoring on a wild pitch.

FSC responded in the bottom of the fifth as Shorr notched an RBI sacrifice bunt to bring home Rivera and put the Rams ahead, 5-3.

Stanya (W, 10-1, CG, 7.0 IP, 7 SO) set down the next six SJBK batters in order as Farmingdale State held on for the 5-3 victory.

Shaw finished with two hits, including a triple, and two runs scored, while Giliberti hit a double and a triple with one run batted in. Rivera had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored and junior first baseman Brooke Walker (Hampton Bays, N.Y.), Capuano and senior shortstop Jessica Clark (Selden, N.Y.) added one hit apiece.

In the second game, Farmingdale State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Shaw and Giliberti singled, before Walker registered an RBI base hit to center. The next batter was Shorr and she hit a two-run double to right center to give FSC the three-run advantage.

On the mound, Shorr tossed three perfect innings to open the game before allowing her first hit in the fourth. Heinsch singled and came around to score on a passed ball to cut their deficit to 3-1.

After the Bears scored another run in the fifth to close within one, FSC drove in a pair of runners in the bottom of the frame to regain a three-run lead, 5-2. Rivera singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Giliberti. Following a ground out, Shorr drove in Giliberti to put the Rams in front by three.

Shorr tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning before allowing a single and an RBI triple to open the seventh. The next batter bunted, but Walker made a diving catch and doubled off the runner at third base.

Shorr (W, 10-1, CG, 7.0 IP, 2 SO) would force a ground ball for the third out as the Rams earned the 5-3 victory.

Giliberti recorded two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while both Walker and Shaw had two hits, a double and one run scored.

Shorr, who earned the complete game victory on the mound, went 2-for-3 at the plate with a game-high three runs batted in.

The Rams next travel to Ridgefield Park to play Skyline Conference opponent Yeshiva in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 26th at 6:00 p.m.
