ITHACA, N.Y. – The Union College women's basketball team battled hard against one of the top teams in the Liberty League on Saturday afternoon, but the Dutchwomen came up just short in a 54-47 loss to Ithaca College at Ben Light Gymnasium.
Junior Megan Lee (4-10, 2-6 Liberty League) led three Dutchwomen in double figures with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and seven rebounds. Seniors Amber Raisner and Darby Leid chipped in 10 points apiece, with Raisner adding five boards and four steals and Leid tallying five assists and three caroms as well. The tandem of Cara Volpe and Grace Cannon combined for 33 points to lift Ithaca (12-3, 8-1 Liberty League) to the victory.
The Dutchwomen put together an excellent effort on both ends of the court in the first half, shooting well and playing solid defense to take a 25-24 lead into halftime. The visitors shot 52.4 percent (11 of 21) from the field in the opening 20 minutes and limited the home team to a 12-of-33 effort (36.3 percent) at the other end. Leid led the team with seven points at halftime, hitting all three of her shots and adding two boards and two steals. In all, seven different Dutchwomen had at least one basket in the first half.
Union started the game by hitting its first three shots from the field, as Raisner had four points and Lee added three to give the Dutchwomen an early 7-2 lead. The Bombers used a 12-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 14-9 lead, but a Leid layup in the final half-minute got Union back within a bucket at 14-11.
The Dutchwomen clamped down defensively to start the second stanza, holding Ithaca without a point for more than four minutes and scoring nine in a row to take a 20-14 lead with 6:05 left. Union did not trail for the remainder of the quarter, with baskets by seniors Laura Vinton and Kendall Degenhardt helping to keep the visitors in front.
Ithaca mounted its comeback in the third quarter, outscoring Union by a 16-7 margin. The teams traded baskets for the first five minutes, with a Leid layup putting Union back up 30-29 with 4:38 left. But the Bombers closed on an 11-2 run, led by seven points from Volpe, to take back control of the contest.
After Volpe started the fourth quarter with a three-point play to take a game-best 11-point lead, Union had one more big run to get back into the contest. The Dutchwomen rattled off 11 straight points in the span of 4:22 to knot the score at 44, with a Raisner jumper getting Union back to even with 4:46 on the clock. However, the Bombers scored on the next possession and the visitors hit only one field goal the rest of the way as Ithaca hit 5-of-6 free throws.
Union shot the ball better from the field, hitting 20-of-48 shots (41.7 percent) and limiting Ithaca to just 37.3 percent (22 of 59) shooting, including 0-of-11 from beyond the arc. But the Bombers hit 10-of-14 attempts from the line while Union was just 5 of 12, while the Bombers also grabbed 13 offensive rebounds that contributed to 15 second-chance points.
Union will return to action on Friday when the Dutchwomen travel to Troy to take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at 5:30 p.m.
